We are what we eat. Are we what we drink? When it comes to hair loss, what we drink matters. Here are some tips I’ve found on the internet which can help reduce or prevent temporary hair loss.

1. Drink less coffee to prevent hair loss

Caffeine decreases the levels of vitamins B and C, potassium, and zinc in our body. This leads to a strain on the adrenal glands and increases the levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, a form of testosterone that induces hair loss.

This is very alarming news! Starbucks, to me, is like the local bar to an alcoholic. I love my coffee very much but I guess sacrifices need to be made for the sake of my hair.

2. Drink plenty of soy milk (soybean milk) to stimulate hair growth

Soy protein reinforces hair and stimulates its growth. What’s a good source of soy protein? Soy milk or soyabean milk.

Personally, I love soybean milk. It tastes really good and wholesome and brings back fond memories of my younger days in Singapore. After a hard day at work, my colleagues and I used to head to the Tow Huay stall at Rochor Road for supper. Nothing like a salty, crispy you tiao (fried dough fritter) and soybean milk with friends.

3. Avoid drinking too much alcohol for healthy, luscious hair

Alcohol lowers the zinc, vitamin B, vitamin C, and folic acid levels in our body, and vitamin deficiency leads to unhealthy hair.

Could this be the reason that Johnny Walker spots a top hat? To hide his thinning hair? ;) Perhaps at my next healthy hair workshop I could ask all the participants who drink heavily to sit together and those who don’t drink to at the opposite end? It might be fun.

4. Drink lettuce and alfalfa juice mixes to promote hair growth

Lettuce is useful in preventing hair loss. Drinking half a litre of of lettuce juice mixed with spinach juice is believed to be able to help hair grow.

Similarly, the juice of alfalfa, in combination with equal quantities of carrot and lettuce juice, taken daily, also helps hair grow.

These concoction - unimaginable to some - are good for your hair. I always say “If it won’t kill you, try it. It might save your hair!”

5. Down orange juice to improve absorption of iron

Iron helps to prevent hair loss and vitamin C improves the absorption of iron. A glass of orange juice, rich in vitamin C, can really help your body to absorb the iron.
