In my previous post I talked about Propecia and how it is not suitable for women. So what available treatments can women who are suffering from hair loss problems seek? An alternative treatment to Propecia is Rogaine.

What is Rogaine?

Rogaine, the trademark for the drug minoxidil, is an over the counter solution used to treat hair loss. It is typically applied at least twice daily to the scalp. Rogaine won’t help you grow a lot of new hair, but will help you maintain the hair that you have.

Rogaine comes in two formulations, regular and extra-strength, containing 2% and 5% of the active ingredient, minoxidil. It is used to stimulate hair growth on the bald spot of the back of the head in men. In women, Rogaine has been known to increase hair growth in the forehead areas.

Who takes Rogaine?

Rogaine is taken by both men and women experiencing mild to moderate hair loss or thinning hair. It has been proven that Rogaine is more effective in women than in men.

How long will it take for me to see improvements?

For best results, apply Rogaine twice daily to the scalp for at least a period of 4 months for results to show.

Are there any side effects?

Rogaine has several side effects to it, including:

  • itchy scalp
  • dandruff
  • an initial increase in hair loss (condition known as shedding)

It is not known whether Rogaine will be harmful to an unborn child or baby, so women who are pregnant are advised not to take Rogaine without first consulting their doctors.

How much will it cost me?

It costs about AUD$50 – AUD$65 for Rogaine regular strength and AUD$60 – AUD$80 for Rogaine extra strength.
