I’ve mentioned before in my earlier posts that genetic hair loss or alopecia is more common in men than in women.

So what are some of the causes of female pattern hair loss? How do women know if they are losing hair? What hair loss treatments or help should they seek when they face hair loss problems?

What causes hair loss in women?

Experts have revealed that different factors cause hair loss in females and males. While the hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT, which then harms hair follicles, happens in both men and women, hair loss in women is believed to be caused by many other types of enzymes as well as hormone receptors and blockers.

Hair loss treatment for women

Rogaine
As mentioned in my previous post, Rogaine is one of the more popular forms of treatment for women experiencing hair loss. Women using Rogaine will see an increase in hair growth in the forehead areas. Propecia, while effective with men, does not work at all on women.

Aldactone
Aldactone is a drug used to reduce the amount of fluid in the body without causing the loss of potassium. It is also used to treat hair loss problems among women by slowing down the production of androgens such as testosterone in the adrenal glands and ovaries.

Tagamet
Tagamet is a histamine blocker used mainly to treat gastrointestinal ulcers. However, it also has a fairly powerful anti-androgenic effect and has been shown to block dehydrotestosterone (DHT) from binding the follicle receptor sites.

Noticing hair loss in women

One of the differences between male and female balding is in the pattern in which the hair loss occurs.

Women tend to lose less total hair than men. Women usually experience diffused hair loss around top of the head. They will see hair thin out behind the original hair line and all over the head fairly evenly. Men lose their hair on the temple, the crown and the higher part of the back.

While men’s hair loss is coupled with age, in women, it can happen anytime.
