Teenagers do not typically face hair loss problems. However, there have been a few cases where teens lose their hair due to several reasons.

1. Hair sprays and braids

Teens who fancy wearing braids and weaves as fashion statements have to be careful not to have their hair pulled back too tightly. Braids that are too tight pull on the roots and cause hair to fall out prematurely.

Excessive use of hair spray can also cause balding or thinning hair among teens because of the build-up of oils and chemicals on the scalp. The presence of these substances on your scalp can block the follicles and keep them from growing as they should.

2. Vitamin deficiency and nutrition

Teenagers who start losing hair should also check to see if they are eating right. Some hair loss problems in teens are simply caused by a vitamin deficiency in their diet and can be corrected once the teenager starts eating healthy.

3. Medication and birth control pills

Side effects from medication such as birth control pills have also been known to cause hair loss problems amongst teens. If you start noticing hair loss in a teenager it is usually cause for concern and maybe you should try to find out if they have been taking drugs or medication that are not right for them.

4. Illness or medical conditions

Certain illnesses and medical conditions have been known to cause hair loss, whether it’s from the stress or effects of the illness. Diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid can interfere with hair production and cause hair loss.

5. Alopecia areata

As mentioned before, alopecia areata is a hereditary condition. It is rare in teens but teenagers who carry this gene may notice hair loss as early as fifteen years old. Although it is more often than not temporary, there have been cases where medical treatment was called for to help hair regrow.
