Most people like to colour and style their hair for various reasons. Teens or young adults often dye their manes shocking shades of colours to make fashion statements or in some cases, to evoke the ire of the parental units. For *ahem* more mature adults like me, we tend to colour our hair to cover up our greying crowns.
However slathering chemical substances on your head or tortuously braiding your tresses for the sake of vanity can sometimes come at a very hefty price, as these individuals can attest to.
Hair loss horror story 1 – 8 year old suffers hair loss after braiding incident
In this first hair loss horror story, 8 year old Jodie Holdsworth was holidaying in Greece in 2006 when she decided to pay a visit to a local hair stylist to get a lasting memento – hair braids.
However, her delight soon turned to horror when her shoulder-length brown hair starting falling off her head in clumps. A year later, poor Jodie has lost all her hair, including her eyelashes and eyebrows after developing Alopecia from the initial stress and shock.
Doctors blame the hair loss on the braids being wound too tight, thus killing the hair follicles. They do not know if her hair will ever grow back.

Hair loss horror story 2 – Dye job gone wrong for bride-to-be
Bride-to-be Natalie Trainer was just 5 weeks away from her wedding when her attempt to get the perfect hair colour for her big day went horribly awry.
Natalie had her locks highlighted at a hairdressing salon but was disappointed with the outcome and decided to get another hairdresser to give it a go.
According to Natalie, she could feel the dye burning her scalp while it was being applied but was told that it needed to be on for 10 minutes. Before long she felt her scalp was on fire and started screaming. The staff in the salon then washed and dried her hair but when Natalie stepped out of the salon her hair started falling out and her scalp was oozing pus and blood.
Medics at a hospital later diagnosed severe chemical burns on her scalp and told her to avoid the sun.

Hair loss horror story 3 – Student commits suicide after allergic reaction to hair dye leaves her bald
This last story is probably the saddest and most terrifying of the lot. 20 year old Emma Rowlatt bought some hair dye from a shop and suffered a near-fatal allergic reaction to the chemical substance.
She was treated in intensive care and lost all her hair as a result of the allergic reaction.
Emma put on a happy front but was secretly struggling inside. Her family and friends had no idea she was depressed or that she wanted to harm herself.
Emma later took an overdose of cocaine in the storeroom of her mother’s pub. She left a note describing herself as a ‘fat, no-haired failure’.
