Top 10 Hair Loss FAQs
Tagged: hair growth, hair loss, hair loss causes, hair loss treatmentVery often, friends or acquaintances who are aware that I am interested in the subject of hair loss ask me a lot of questions about their hair or, in most cases, the lack thereof (They perceive me to be the all-knowing hair guru).
Finding many similarities in most of the questions asked I have compiled a top 10 list of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on hair loss. This way, the next time someone asks me a question related to hair loss, I can simply direct them here.
1. What causes hair loss?
To summarise, there are a number of reasons why people lose hair, including:
- Hormones
- Genetic disposition
- Diet
- Diseases/illnesses
- Scalp Damage
To find out more, you can read my previous post on common hair loss causes.
2. How much hair do we normally lose a day?
We lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. This is perfectly normal.
3. Will my hair grow back if I am balding?
Depending on what type of hair loss you are facing, your hair may or may not grow back. If you are suffering from Androgenetic or Cicatricial (scarring) Alopecia, chances are you are looking at permanent hair loss.
If you are experiencing Alopecia Areata, Traction Alopecia or suffering from hair loss due to an illness or disease, there is a higher chance of your hair growing back.
4. Will wearing a hat/cap make me lose hair?
This is a common myth I’ve blogged about in my previous post about hair loss myths. Wearing a cap will not make you bald.
5. If I am experiencing hair loss, should I shave or cut my hair to make it grow thicker and faster?
Unfortunately, hair growth is genetically programmed. Yes it is all in the genes. How fast your hair grows will not be affected by close clipping, shaving, trimming, or cutting.
6. Can my hair loss condition be treated?
It really depends on why you are losing hair. If it is a result of medication, you should inform your physician, who would probably be able to do something about it.
Products like Propecia and Rogaine are also available to help slow down or curb the balding process.
7. I am balding. Will my children develop this problem as well?
If you are experiencing the symptoms of temporary hair loss such as Alopecia Areata, it is not likely your children will inherit this problem.
However, if you are suffering from Androgenetic Alopecia, there is a higher chance that your children will experience genetic hair loss in future.
8. Is my hair loss a result of weakness and fatigue?
If you are feeling weak or fatigued it could be possible that you have some deficiency. If that is the case then your hair loss condition might be caused by that. It is best to go to the doctor to see what needs to be done.
9. Am I losing hair because of stress at work?
Sometimes stress is a factor in hair loss. However stress induced hair loss is not permanent and your hair will probably regrow after the stress period is over.
10. Can you recommend me the best hair loss treatment?
It is hard to determine which treatment is best as everyone reacts differently to various remedies. Certain treatments work better and faster on some individuals than others.
To determine the best treatment for you, consult your physician, start on a treatment and monitor its progress. There is no miracle hair sprouting formula that will work on everyone.

“between 50 and 100 hairs per day” … but nobody ever tells us how many NEW hairs grow each day.
I have really fine hairs. Any kind of conditioner or treatment just makes my hairstyling less/i> bouffant.
Hair is more of an issue for the individual in our society than is generally acknowledged.
so keep up the good work.
Hi Anne,
You are absolutely right
Hair loss is an issue that is just not discussed enough. I think there is an underlying fear that focusing too much on your hair may make you appear “frivolous” or “superficial”.
But it’s quite a serious matter! It may be a manifestation of something more troubling (e.g. stress from a bad marriage). It may also indicate hormonal imbalances.
Have you read about hair miniaturization (thinning)? Causes include age, genetics and hormones.
Here’s the blog post in case you are interested in reading more:
