Salt & Copper Will Affect Your Hair
Tagged: hair growth, hair loss, hair loss causes, hair loss preventionHave you been told before that eating salty food will cause you to lose hair? Apparently this ‘myth’ is not a myth at all. Did you also know that too much or too little copper in your system will also cause you to lose hair?
I am very fascinated because I’ve just come across quite a few articles documenting what an excessive intake of sodium or copper can do to your hair.
If you’re wondering why too much salt will lead to hair loss, apparently eating too much salt can lead to fluid retention and increased blood pressure that will deprive your body’s cells, including cells in your scalp, of oxygen thus resulting in hair loss.
Also, although we may need be salt savvy and avoid taking in too much sodium, our bodies can sometimes create too much sodium on its own. The cause for this is stress. Therefore, to minimise sodium retention, you need to try and remain stress free. If you lead a stressful lifestyle due to the nature of your job or something, take up healthy and calming relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation.
Too little or too much copper can both cause hair loss. Healthy tissue concentrations of copper lie between 1.7 and 3.5 milligrams. Everything else will cause hair loss.
Copper toxicity can vary from person to person, and can depend on the individuals metabolism and diet. The slower your metabolic rate, the higher your copper retention and the faster your metabolic rate, the less copper you retain. Food high in copper include milk, chocolate, oysters, nuts, high fat meats and salmon.
So if you suspect you are suffering from copper deficiency, which in turn is leading to your hair loss, these are the food to eat. Vice versa, if you think you have too much copper in your body, avoid those food. The articles also state that vegetarians have a greater ability to retain copper than non-vegetarians, which is very interesting for me. I guess if you’re vegetarian and losing hair, you’ll need to stop eating nuts and milk or chocolate.
Birth control pills also use copper, making women more susceptible to copper imbalances.
Basically copper gets into our system most commonly through our drinking water especially if our pipes are made of copper. If you think your pipes are the source of the problem, a solution would be to drink bottled water. It sounds expensive but if it can solve your hair loss problems, why not?
