What is Hair Transplant?
Hair transplantation is the surgical removal of hair from a certain area of the scalp and its relocation to a bald or thinned area. For example, if you are balding from the top of your head, but have healthy hair growth at the back or sides of your head, doctors can remove some of your hair from the sides and back and have them transplanted to the top.
In this case, the portions where you take your hair from is called the donor area or donor sites.
How much will it cost me?
Hair transplant costs varies from area to area and amount of micrograft transplantation. Some doctors may charge per session and some may charge per graft. When dealing with costs, you also need to take into consideration the fact that the procedure may need to be repeated. You should always clarify the cost involved with your cosmetic surgeon first before agreeing to the procedure.
How is it performed?
There are 2 methods used for removing hair to be transplanted.
1. Hair is removed in small circular areas called plugs, each containing between eight and twelve hairs
2. Hair is removed in long strips along the sides or near the bottom of the hairline
Incisions are then made in the balding area. The removed patches or strips of hair are trimmed into smaller pieces. These patches of hair are then “planted” in the balding area.
How long does it take for transplanted hair to grow?
It typically takes about 2 - 4 months before the transplanted hair starts growing.
How can I be a candidate for hair transplant?
You should have healthy hair growth at the back and sides of your head, a clear understanding of the procedure and realistic expecations.
