Most people who suffer from hair loss are well aware of Propecia, or the drug finasteride. After all, Propecia is the first pill approved by the FDA to treat male pattern baldness or hair loss on the top of the head and mid-scalp areas. However, are they aware of the side effects of the drug?
As mentioned in my previous entry Regrowing Hair With The Help Of Propecia, Propecia is only taken by men and should never be taken by women or children. It is not safe for women of childbearing age and it simply doesn’t work for older women. For pregnant women, it may even cause birth defects in a male baby’s sex organs if taken. So to all women, please take note. Apparently Propecia can be absorbed through our skin so women should avoid contact at all cost.
Based on studies, the more “well known” side effects observed in users of Propecia include:
- decreased libido - in up to 1.8% of people
- erectile dysfunction - up to 1.3%
- decreased ejaculate amount - up to 1.2%
However, the side effects all stopped when the men discontinued taking Propecia. Other side effects include:
- experiencing tenderness in the breast
- unexplained skin rash
- itching
- hives
- wheezing
- difficulty breathing or swallowing
- testicular pain
If you experience any of these side effects, inform your doctor immediately.
Although there have been no known cases of an overdose on Propecia, some people might be allergic to the drug. Some warning signs to look out for:
- difficulty breathing
- closing of your throat
- swelling of your lips, tongue, or face
- hives
These could all be signs of an allergic reaction so do not leave the symptoms untreated!
