I know this blog is about hair loss but I came across some fun hair trivia which I really wanted to share!

1. What is hair made of?

Hair is made from proteins called keratins which makes our nails too.

Hair, teeth, nails and horns are all basically the same thing at the biochemical level. They are all made of the same main ingredient.

Did you know that car tyres go through the same chemical process as our hair to achieve the same strength and toughness?

2. What happens if I eat my hair?

Eating your hair is a condition called “trichophagia”. This condition can be potentially harmful because our stomachs do not have the means to break down hair fibre. The hair fibre can cause ulcers and in some cases, be collected into a hairball and built up into a sizeable mass.

The only way to remove the hair is through an operation.

3. Who has more hair follicles - a mouse, a horse or a human?

Now this is certainly very interesting but a mouse, a horse and a human have the SAME NUMBER OF HAIR FOLLICLES!

With the exception of our palms and soles, almost all our skin is covered in hair follicles.

4. Why is some hair curly and some hair straight?

How straight or curly your hair is, depends on the number of disulfide bonds between hair proteins found in the hair shaft.

The greater the number of links, the curlier the hair, and the fewer the number of links, the straighter the hair.

5. How much hair do I have?

The average person has up to 150,000 hairs on her or his head. A single strand can support 100 grams in weight.

That means, a whole head of hair could (in theory) support the weight of two elephants.
